The New Luxe – MAN jewellery
During our recent editorial shoot BYO caught up with local Sydney designer Sheila Man of jewellery label MAN. We find out more about the woman behind the brand and just how she creates her beautifully bold modern pieces.
Describe your brand in a sentence?
Understated modern luxury.
Do you have a muse and why is she your muse?
I have a few. They change constantly. But mostly I’m inspired by real, stylish women that have their own unique style. At the moment I’m obsessed with Caroline Demaigret.
Can you describe the MAN woman?
The MAN woman is usually over 25 years old, she’s not terribly concern about current trends. She’s worldly and classic with a modern edge.
Your new Collection “ from Russia with love has just launched tell us what inspired the collection and describe your favorite piece from you collection?
This collection was inspired by the whole luxury movement coming from Russia right now. The personalities such as Mira Duma, Irina Perminova were my main inspiration for all of the designs. This is by far my favorite collection so choosing a piece is very hard! But I think my Moscow bracelet (haven’t taken it off since I got it) and my Irina Bucket bag in Leopard have to be my two favorite items.
What motivates/inspires you?
I think fundamentally I have a desire to create, so I’m always thinking. Something will tick something off and in my head I have created a range in 5 minutes. Absolutely everything inspires me: from a muse, to a stone, to an interior, to the universe, to my baby.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about my family, my friends, nature and design.
What made you decide to launch a jewellery label?
I worked in fashion and although I loved it I was finding that I needed a creative outlet. I made some necklaces out of bolts nearly 4 years ago when nobody was using bolts. I really like the concept, at that time it was unique. As soon as I shot the lookbook, they got picked up and my first piece of press was the cover of Pages. I knew that I was on a good path!
Your unique aesthetic has a bold geometric element how did you develop this signature look?
It all started with the bolts. I really like the industrial element of it. And it developed from there. It’s very me.
Take us through a day in the life of Sheila Man?
I wake up around 7-7.30 I have breakfast with my baby, get ready and then around 9 am I start my working day. When you work in fashion/ jewellery no two days are the same. Sometimes I have meetings, other times is research and design. Also sending invoices, packing and sending orders. Sampling and making jewellery. But what I’m always doing is looking for inspiration, updating my instagram, checking stock levels and thinking what next!
Where do you see your label expanding?
I would like to grow my business and fan base and expand overseas.
What’s one thing you love about Sydney?
The natural surroundings. That’s why I live in Sydney. I have 3 of the most beautiful beaches 10 minutes from my door. You can’t compete with that!
If you could work with a material you don’t normally work with what would it be and what would you make out of it?
Ooooo that’s hard! I would like to work with solid gold and diamonds (big diamonds!). I’d modernize the diamonds and the gold and make it more MAN and not so girlish! I would make a whole range!
If you had any advice or words of inspiration to give emerging new designers what would it be?
Be yourself, don’t compromise your vision for anyone and work hard!
What’s next for MAN the label?
Can’t tell. You will have to stay tuned!
