The Growl's Marc Early is hopefully on the mend
Last Monday night on Sydney’s Oxford Street, Marc Earley, bassist of Perth band The Growl, was the victim of a disgusting unprovoked attack. This left him with injuries (two fractures on the upper knuckle) to his ring finger of his left hand. Doctors stated that Marc would have to undergo emergency surgery within 48 hours to retain proper mobility of his fingers, allowing him to keep following his livelihood and passion – music.
The following day fellow band member and friend Cam Avery took to Facebook, urging fans and do-gooders to donate money to the cause, and after a slight hiccup with PayPal, the page went live.
If there was any good news to come out of this horrible attack, it’s that fans have dug deep, raising over $20,000 in only 24 hours to give relief to Marc when it comes to his medical bills and recovery.
Yesterday, The Growl posted a statement on their Facebook page from Marc, who had this to say:
“I am totally overwhelmed by the support and donations by the public in response to my injuries from Monday’s incident. This truly is my worst nightmare and while in the past few days it’s been incredibly hard comprehending the impact this injury will have on my abilities to keep playing music; seeing all the support from everyone has been the best positive distraction for me.
My injury is very serious, with only a 50% chance of regaining normal movement. I will be going into surgery tomorrow and then entering in an intensive daily rehab program. I’m not expected to see the true idea of how successful the procedure was until the 12-month mark.
Thanks to everyone’s donations I’ve been able to get the best hand surgeon in WA as well be under the best rehab care available. There is no way this could have happened without everyone’s support.
I am eternally grateful for everyone’s support, as well my family, friends, band mates, and especially my brother Cam Avery for organising this whole fundraiser. It’s thanks to all of you that I have the best chance of recovering from this terrible incident.”
At the present time there has been no word on the outcome of Marc’s surgery.
Pond’s Nick Allbrook will fill in on bass for The Growl’s remaining Laneway shows. Backyard Opera wishes Marc all the best and we hope for a speedy recovery!
You can still make donations here!
