Tara Grace – Taking the Leap and Taking it in Stride
Young, beautiful, free spirited and gutsy, with a healthy love of music and appreciation for the beauty of the great outdoors. This sums up Tara Grace the creative force behind the label that shares her name.
We caught up with local Sydney designer Tara Grace upon the launch of her first solo collection to find out what made her take the leap and start her own label, what we can expect from her up and coming collection and where we can get a hold of the perfect summer pieces.
How long have you had your label for?
I actually only launched my label two weeks ago. It’s been on my mind since I was 18… but only just made it happen this past year.
Tell us about your brand? What’s the philosophy behind it?
I wanted to create a brand for the girl who isn’t afraid to wear something uniquely beautiful. A girl who loves sunshine on her face, takes barefoot adventures through nature, and star gazes at night.
Where do you find inspiration?
Inspiration is all around me. It could be the colour of a sunset, a flower; or even my mother’s vintage clothes.
Do you have any muses or style icons?
I don’t think I do. Oh actually, I am totally infatuated with Isabella Manfredi of The Preatures. I love her intensity and lustiness. I have massive respect for a woman who gives everything to her audience.
What’s your favorite piece in your current collection?
Aww, that’s like asking a mother who their favourite child is. In front of them. They’re all favourites! If I have to choose I think the rainbow fern daydreamer is a current favourite on my website at the moment.
Tell us about your universe?
Work, work, work, broken up by the occasional gig or music festival with friends.
What is one thing you cant live without?
Where can you see the brand expanding?
I'm currently in talks about stocking a store in Perth and select boutiques in other states. I don’t want to be big. I just want to maintain a label that’s not mass produced. I want to keep it special.
What season are you working on (or launching) now and can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m currently working on my Autumn/Winter range that is dominated by lace and has a touch of velvet. There will be a playsuit, tailed blazer, lace high waisted pants and I think there is even a collared shirt in there somewhere!
When is your new collection out?
Where can we buy your stuff?
I have an online store www.taragrace.bigcartel.com. I also occasionally do the markets at Bondi, In the new year it will be stocked in Sydney boutique South of The Border. (http://www.southofthebordersydney.com )
If you could design anything else what would it be?
Hats. I have a big thing for hats. I’ve always wanted to do a small range of my own jewellery as well.
What are you wearing this summer?
Flowing rayon maxis, lovely silk dresses and always an ankle boot. Complemented with a wide-brimmed hat.
Alt-J – An Awesome Wave. I think I’ve listened to the album at least 20 times this week…. And maybe my new embroidered and beaded bag from India.
