Last week BYO checked out the launch of Artist Noni Cragg's first solo exhibition - Sun + Water at the Tate Gallery, Glebe.
Noni is an actor, artist and model of Aboriginal/Irish heritage and a collaborator and muse of the fashion label Desert Designs. Sun + Water is a body of portraiture work which portrays a contemporary connection to the artist herself and her subject’s relationship to their culture.
Noni is exploring blood, heritage and family; what it means to be indigenous. Sun + Water examines what it means to have a dual heritage/identity within today’s society. She celebrates duality and a crossing over of cultures, expressing the notion of Aboriginality being defined by a Culture, not a colour.
Noni’s subjects are from Bundjalung, Gambayniggirr, Darug, Kamilaroi, Gamilaraay and Manjilang. They include Amrita Hepi, Lauren Eiko Bravo, Otis Carey, Shenay Carey, Jake Gordon, Benn Pigot, Dave Cragg, Trent Rowsell, Georgia Borthwick.
Noni’s subjects are her family, her brothers, her partner and close dear friends - all humans who are actively creative, in touch and proud of who they are - they have each played significant roles in shaping
Noni into the artist and person she is. The subjects ofSun + Water are a small but profound collective of young Indigenous Australians with a vision to inspire the following Generation of First Nations People.
Noni Cragg graduated with a BFA in painting in 2012. For the last 5 years Noni has exhibited in group shows at spaces such as Mar Gallery, Era Gallery and Kind.Of Gallery.
