Speech Therapy 9 ft. Brad Strut, Luka Lesson and Mr. Hill this Wed 27 Aug
Work-Shop and The Tongue present the 9th installment of Speech Therapy, a monthly night of Hip hop spoken word from Australia’s finest MCs and spoken word poets.
Since July 2013, Speech Therapy has hosted the who’s who of the Australia’s hip hop talent, including Urthboy and Ozi Batla (Elephant Traks), Solo (Horrorshow), Nick Lupi and Jimmy Nice (Spit Syndicate), Omar Musa and many more to present their lyrics in acapella format to a captivated audience.
This month’s line up includes Heavyweight Hip hop veteran, Brad Strut, Australian Slam Poet winner, Luka Lesson, and new school talent Mr. Hill.
Brad Strut is an Australian hip hop legend, celebrated as both a solo artist and as part of one of the most influential group of the genre, Lyrical Commission. His influence on the scene is hard to overestimate and his ability to pen some of the best rhymes in the country will be on full display when he treats us to a unique one-off acapella performance at Speech Therapy.
Luka Lesson is a spoken word poet who has built a cultlike worldwide following through piercingly honest poetry, breathtaking performances and vigorous grassroots touring across 5 continents. Luka Lesson’s new album: EXIT (released May 1) is a convergence of spoken word and hip hop in a lyrical marriage of eclectic production and a deep love for storytelling. Luka Lesson is the next significant artist in the canon of powerful spoken word / hip hop MCs like Saul Williams (USA) and Scroobius Pip (UK).
" If you do not enjoy words that are placed in succession, with great care and in such a way as to display raw vulnerability, love and the strength and resilience of the human character, then Luka Lesson's EXIT is probably not for you. "
- Jean Grae
For the past three years Luka has been touring internationally and recently returned from performing in four cities across South Africa - appearing on national television and headlining alongside Jean Grae (NYC) at the OneBlood Hip-hop Festival.
This month we are joined by QLD upstart Mr Hill from Mr Hill & Rahjconkas. This young MC has shown great promise on his first two independently released albums and is gearing up to promote his third LP which is dropping later this year. He recently undertook a national tour supporting The Funkoars and scored a hit with the Triple J supported "Telescope":
