Reclaim the night
By Li-Mei Russell
According to a NSW Family and Community Services on domestic violence report, women are 2.5 times more likely than male victims to be killed by their domestic partners. Reclaim the night is a global annual protest against gendered violence that is planned to take place later this month. Despite the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research noting a decline in levels of domestic violence over the past decade, NSW Police deal with around 370 instances of domestic and family violence per day. The protest aims to raise awareness of these statistics and the issues facing women in 2014. The rally will be held in Hyde Park at 6:30pm October 31st and will include a march through the CBD and speeches from a variety of women on issues from the closures of women's-only refuges to the rising prevalence of street harassment. “Stop the violence. Break the Silence.” http://www.women.nsw.gov.au |
