PLAYWRITE ANNOUNCE SECOND SINGLE, ‘WHITTAKER’ OFF FORTHCOMING DEBUT ALBUM
2014 is like a piñata full of sonic surprises from Melbourne indie five-piece band Playwrite. Lauded as one of the top 12 bands to watch in 2014 by Tone Deaf and JOY FM, they are set to unleash their new emotionally driven and thought-provoking single, Whittaker off their impending debut album, scheduled for release later this year.
Reeling from their packed out June residency shows in Melbourne, and with their last single, Lady Oracle still hot on everyone’s lips, they make a sudden change of pace to unveil their most strikingly honest work to date.
Moving away from their trademark tapestry of intricate musical layerings, they’ve exposed the seams of something untouched and vulnerable. Stripped back and raw, their latest offering is a hauntingly poignant lamentation of humanity at its very core.
Drawing comparisons to indie trailblazers TV On The Radio and Arcade Fire, Playwrite’s musical evolution is one that has been on a rapidly ascending trajectory through their varied and vibrant live performances, soaring lyrics and swirling guitars, creating a reputation for themselves for invoking a wild and uninhibited energetic live show that is not to be missed.
Written in the Victorian hinterland by band members Patrick Holcombe and Jordan White and orchestrated over hundreds of dark nights in a Brunswick warehouse by the band as a whole. The single was recorded deep in the heart of Melbourne at Sing Sing Studio, produced by Jimi Maroudas (Kimbra, Eskimo Joe, Bertie Blackman) and mastered by Emily Lazar (Haim, Vampire Weekend, James Vincent).
