Outside Art Exhibition
Going to an exhibition and discussing art is not as pretentious as you might think- especially if it's the OutsideArt pop-up exhibition, an exhibition you can stumble upon while still dripping with sea water from Cronulla beach, or peer at from a restaurant window.
This is because 3 giant cubes are strewn across Cronulla mall at the moment, painted by 12 local and international artists. Around the corner Cronulla's own Space44 Gallery are exhibiting smaller works by the same 12 artists. We hit their opening party Friday night, where Sailor Jerry's was flowing and grunge music was pumping.
Outside people chatted and relaxed in the sticky heat, while nodding to the various records being spun. Through the creaky back door however, a hugely diverse range of artworks hung. The artists worked on anything from canvas, to skateboards to an actual pig-skin drum. From the bright, many-eyed characters of Coolbin Nash, to the intricate line drawings of Nick Potts- Space44 has dug up some of the best artists they've exhibited so far. My personal favourite was the plastic skateboard painted with a lactating naked woman, but Fintan Magee's dripping portraits attracted the most eyes.
A mere 3 minutes away, down the bustling strip of Cronulla mall, lie the 3 giant wooden cubes, where these artists are given a chance to really show off their talent. Each face of the cubes are painted by one of the artists we saw inside the gallery. Everyone walking by gets the chance to appreciate art- whether you're a drunk Friday-night teen stumbling around the cubes and Instagramming them, or a loud middle-aged woman coming out of the nearby restaurant.
The OustideArt pop-up exhibition is a genius concept- 2D artworks you can walk through and around in the familiarity of your local shopping mall. Whether you like the bold, clean patterns of Brett Chan, the mutated Bart Simpson of Jack Irvine or realistic portraits of Fintan Magee, there is an artist for every taste. We weren't in an art gallery, but a genuine appreciation of these artists' works is definitely not lost on us or the Cronulla locals.
