OpJam: A New Space for Sharing Music
With an ever increasing number of up-and-coming musicians emerging around the country, it’s often difficult to get noticed or break free from the crowd. Opjam.com is a brand new website containing a number of internet-streamed radios. This may sound pretty familiar, but the difference with Opjam lies in that it is the artists and fans that are responsible for the production and distribution of its content. Not only does the site provide a social space for artists to launch and promote their music, but it also provides opportunities for artists to build a fan base, whilst also giving users the flexibility to customise their own listening experience.
Although the site is currently still in beta mode, is already gaining momentum among artists, fans and even labels. Opjam is swiftly becoming an awesome way to tap into unexplored social spaces with massive potential for the discovery of artists who would otherwise go unnoticed.
This week we caught up with Chris Johnson, one of the co-founders of OpJam.
Who are you guys and where did the idea for Opjam come from?
Both (co-founder) Michael Mazzone and I were looking to start a music portal to allow people to conduct online jamming across the internet, after thinking how cool it would be to Jam with friends overseas.
How did you actually go about starting up the site?
We looked into the technical side of things but it was proving to be pretty difficult. However whilst we were looking into it, it became apparent that there was an opportunity to create a social space for musicians and their fans to interact other than Facebook and Soundcloud. We started playing around with the idea, developing a few prototypes but something was missing. Thus I went over to SXSW last year where musicians were asking for advice on how to build their fan base in a way that encouraged a more pro-active following. We started to think about how audio was really the new space for social media and then we came up with OPJAM, that allows interaction and sharing on your own radio streams.
Give us a run down on how the site is intended to be used by artists, fans and labels
If you are an artist, OpJam is radio designed to build your fan base. You can upload live jams, promote gigs and tracks, build an audio timeline and connect with fans directly using the platform. There are brand sponsorship and advertising opportunities, music industry contacts and active broadcasters that will have a stake in promoting your music.
As a listener, OpJam is a great way to discover new music, talk to the artists and share live on radio what you have to say about the music. Get more involved, express yourself and produce your own radio broadcasts with the artists and share in revenue through brand involvement.
Anyone interested in getting involved as an artist, or simply checking out the massive amount of music already accessible simply pop over to www.opjam.com
