Favourites from the New York Frieze Art Fair this weekend
Coming up this weekend in New York is the Frieze Art Fair, happening on Randall Island, overlooking Manhattan’s East River. Running this Friday 9th through to Monday 12th, the fair will be presenting over 190 international galleries. Apace with contemporary art for exhibit and sale, are a few other projects and pop-up food stalls that have caught our eye.
This year’s programming includes a series of talks of which Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina of feminist art collective, Pussy Riot will be in conversation with The New Yorker’s editor, David Remnick; while poet Kenneth Goldsmith will be giving a keynote lecture.
Each year the fair tributes an artist-run space which has made a contribution to cultural life in that city. This year, it’s featuring Al’s Grand Hotel, the 1971 art project by Allen Ruppersberg, a temporary hotel in Los Angeles which also acted as a venue for parties and performances. Along with LA-based Public Fiction, the hotel is being re-envisioned with two functioning hotel rooms where guests can book and stay.
For food and drink, Brooklyn’s Bushwick-based Roberta’s pizza will be turning out its classic wood-fired pizza alongside a selection of craft beer and wine. And our favourite of this year’s food trucks is Coolhaus who’ll be serving up their ‘architecturally inspired’ ice cream.
