KAY ROSEN: YOURS OURS
By Dinnie Muslihat
Does simply being a member of the public constitute ownership of public space? If not, then who does it actually belong to?
Public space is one of those concepts that seems to be overlooked quite often despite the fact that it is so prevalent in our everyday lives. Kay Rosen is an American painter who decided to combine art with her linguistics background and put forth the notion in her Map of the World exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Rosen has emblazoned the words ‘YOURS OURS’ on one of the gallery’s most public spaces so as to bring to mind questions of possession, occupation and cultural territory.
Considering this particular topic is an unavoidable one within the current world we live in, go and check out this free display and ponder to yourself the aforementioned questions.
