Jonti on Since I Left You
Jonti, the man who once upon a time brought us Danimals, is just about ready to air what may just be his biggest project yet. Along with his Astral People label buddies, he’s set to recreate the entirety of The Avalanches seminal, and only, album Since I Left You for OutsideIn Festival this weekend. Having previously stated that Since I Left You is one of his top three electronic albums of all time, it’s a project that means a lot to him. Luckily for me, Jonti took a bit of time out of rehearsing to answer a few of my questions about the project."
What does Since I Left You mean to you?
Since I Left You is my favourite album. It has outlined my whole life and had a whole new purpose every few years including this one with this project.
I think the album represents ambition, heart and pure out of control fun.
Who might BYO be familiar with who’s working with you on the Since I Left You project?
The whole crew is awesome and their names and instruments are:
Jonti – Guitar, Samples, Vocals
Moses Macrae - Drums
Matt Migz - Turntables
Daniel Finn – Drums, SPD Drums, Vocals
Moktar Youngblood – MPD Samples, Vocals, Percussion
Rainbow Chan – Lead Vocals, Saxophone
Rose Chan – Moog Opus 3, Flute, Vocals
Steve Adler – Bass, Double Bass
Tess Nicolaou – Violin, Vocals
Vanessa Tammetta – Violin
Who are we not familiar with but should be?
Hopefully by the end of this everyone will be more familiar
What’s the weirdest item or piece of equipment you’ve had to use so far to recreate the record live?
We've been using a lunch box ukulele with the Harlem Globe Trotters on it. That has been pretty cool!
There’s a video of you guys rehearsing on your Facebook page and you’re all losing it. Who goes craziest at rehearsals?
Rose Chan(who also fronts Oki Osan) usually looks pretty sad while playing, but she's always the first to start jumping around and go insane.
What’s your favourite song to play from Since I Left You so far?
It changes every day but maybe Electricity for now. Just the way it goes… It’s such a beautiful operatic intro which leads into the funkiest , most messed up beat you've ever heard.
What song has been the hardest to recreate?
Close To You was pretty hard to nail because it has so many abrupt changes.
What’s your favourite Avalanches lyric and why?
In Two Hearts in 3/4 Time there is a bossa nova sample of a duet singing 'A diamond covered star or a polka dot balloon' over and over. I really like that.
If you were lying on the couch, what would that mean?
It would either mean too much partying or Breaking Bad is on.
What would it mean to you to play ‘Live at Dominoes’ live at Dominoes?
THE WORLD! That song is so much fun to play!
What does it mean to have the The Avalanches backing this project?
It means everything, because we are doing this to show our appreciation towards them, and if they weren't feeling it, we wouldn't do it.
Will this be a one off or are you going to take this show on the road?
We’re keen to do more shows, however there’s 10 of us, but if we could make it feasible then we'll do more. It would be a shame to do all this work for one show.
On a general note, who are you looking forward to catching at OutsideIn?
BadBadNotGood, Freddie Gibbs, Laurel Halo and Snakehips. But also seeing locals like Oisima, Rainbow Chan(of course), Cosmo's Midnight, Wave Racer and other local's will be great too.
