BYO Tracks: JON - h22
It sometimes feels like there’s a glut of Australian hip hop, but that just makes the stand-outs all the more special. JON’s debut EP H22 is a groovy mix of retro breakbeats and celestial synths that well and truly marks the Brisbane rapper as one to watch.
‘H22’, the title track, somehow ties together a classic 90’s beat (scratching included), sci-fi keys, kitsch finger clicks, and a sickly-sweet, Dire Straits-esque guitar solo. That said, it takes a conscious unravelling of the song to identify how strange this combination of sounds actually is; the thought that strikes first is just ‘Oh, this is tight’.
JON’s flow is flawless yet offhand, and he remains lyrically engaging throughout. Each verse is a syncopated mix of multisyllabic rhyming and double entendre, but the content never gets too heavy: Here to rock the microphone / Mike Tyson body blow / pipes inside my home every Friday night.
H22 is an EP you can dance to, vibe to, or take out a pen and pad and learn a thing or two to. Check it out.
