Getting Set for Summer with Jets

Summer is on its way and the search for the perfect cossie begins. Some say that your swimwear should fit just as well as your lingerie because: A - it will be seen in public and B - you will most likely be wearing it for longer than you might your lingerie. Just as lingerie is designed to make you feel beautiful by accentuating your curves, it makes a whole lot of sense that your swimwear should do the same.
One designer who understands this is Jessika Allen of Jets. She has mastered the art of creating swimwear that is both chic and flattering for all shapes. The Australian swimwear label is known for fashion forward yet utterly wearable swimwear. Jessika’s signature style combined with meticulous construction continues to set Jets apart as a premium international swimwear label.
We recently caught up with Jessika upon the recent launch of her latest collection “The Intuition Collection 2014/15”.
Tell us a bit about how Jets began?
JETS all began for me in 2001. The decision to buy the swimwear brand actually came quite suddenly; my husband, Adrian, woke me up from my sleep and said “let’s buy JETS”. It was tremendously exciting, nerving and a huge leap for both of us, but we knew it was the right decision.
My whole life had been dedicated to fashion and design, which has always been where I envisioned my career, so it felt like a natural progression; the next stage of my life.
We took a well-respected brand and injected a new focus and signature design style into it with an awareness of the original design philosophies, from there came JETS by Jessika Allen.
How would you describe your brand?
The JETS vision is focused in design and innovation, which I believe is the essence to what we’re all about - creating beautiful swim, accessories and ready-to-wear garments that make women look and feel glamorous.
Elegant, sophisticated and timeless, JETS understands style. Precision and form mixed with grace, function meets fashion perfectly.
What is your design philosophy?
My design philosophy is built on the foundations of fit, fashion and fabrication. This creative viewpoint allows me to craft garments for real women – each with a different lifestyle and personality. Fashion-forward, classic, and at times eclectic – the JETS woman, much like the JETS brand, is ageless.
As a premium luxury swimwear brand, I believe it’s imperative we uphold this standard of superior quality through design integrity and unique style.
What has been the highlight of having your own label?
I believe the highlight to owning JETS can be pinpointed to many factors; that rush of adrenalin I feel at the birth of a new collection, the story I can tell through different colours, prints and textures throughout the design process, or when the perfect new shape is created that makes you feel like it was designed specifically for you the way it fits and drapes the body.
Being able to do what I love brings so much excitement and focus to each day! However, who’s not to say that having instant access to a dream wardrobe isn’t a pretty cool reality!
What are you are most passionate about in life?
While remaining passionate comes naturally for my life inside JETS, outside of work I also have many passions and commitments. From spending time with my family, entertaining at home, involving myself in charities, such as the Sony Foundation, and treating myself to the art gallery, musicals and theatre; I aim to involve myself in as much as possible.
I’m a strong believer in the importance of remaining cultured, involved in the community and socially aware.
Another passion of mine is my commitment to teaching and training aspiring designers and creatives. To involve myself in the shaping of the future workforce is very exciting and rewarding.
What do you love most about swimwear and designing it?
From a very young age I have always adored fashion and design. After attending the University of Technology, Sydney, where I studied Fashion Design and Textiles, and completing a post-graduate program in Milan, my love for stretch fabrics began! It was the early 80’s and bodysuits were all the rage. This love very quickly progressed into swimwear, and now here I am today!
What fuels my passion is understanding what women want in their swimwear, to feel beautiful and confident, and creating garments that fulfil these needs.
Tell us a little bit more about your resort wear pieces and accessories?
The JETS resortwear and accessories highlight the fashion essentials for the woman of today, an exciting expansion to the collection that speaks directly to the modern consumer’s need for a day-to-night ensemble.
Attentive to the needs of the fashion-smart woman, the JETS Intuition Collection 2014/15 adds dimension and grandeur to the resort look with playsuits, dresses, kaftans, tailored pants and enviable accessories, think tote bags, clutches, beach towels and visors, all fundamentals to the JETS aesthetic we know and love.
Trending this season is bold iKat prints, geo-floral, hyper-saturated hues and sports luxe pieces spliced with tropicana, set to give the contemporary woman a myriad of looks to enhance her off-duty style.
What is your favourite beach/ resort/ holiday spot and why?
Domestically I love the beaches south of Sydney that fringe the Royal National Park. I love enjoying long weekends away with our daughter, the ultimate mini-family holidays of sun and sand!
As for my favourite holiday spots internationally, I absolutely adore Positano, Italy. From the pristine Mediterranean, fresh local produce, the lively locals, panoramic views and the pastel colours of the houses that border the Cliffside town. The Amalfi Coast is easily the most divine holiday destination!
We always love your White Label pieces tell us more about the philosophy behind White Label?
The White Label Collection was launched in 2002 as an extension to the JETS Swimwear brand; it’s my outlet to design with a couture-inspired mindset where creativity runs high and anything goes!

Where do you see Jets expanding?
With the business landscape evolving and become increasingly digital, the future and expansion possibilities are all very exciting. I look forward to presenting our swimwear to women through social media and other next-generation digital platforms, including becoming a truly global brand.
