For the first time since its inception in 2011, this year Northern Lights was opened to a national call out. Nearly 600 entries were received from all over Australia, with one in five artists being aged 22 and under.
Focused on showcasing emerging Australian talent to an international audience, the competition will see one band and one solo artist travel to Iceland to play the Iceland Airwaves Festival in November this year. As well as being included as part of the official lineup for Airwaves, the winners will get the chance to meet and network with international industry professionals, spend a day in the studio and be inspired by Iceland’s dramatic scenery.
The prestigious music festival held in Reykjavik in November is a highlight of the international music industry calendar, renowned for its impressive lineup and showcasing of the best music from around the world.
Winners will be announced at the end of August, and will head over to perform in early November.
Previous winners of Northern Lights include Oliver Tank, who recently supported Lorde on her national tour, andRainbow Chan, who featured in the epic ‘Since I Left You’ Vivid/Live extravaganza at Sydney Opera House.
This year's national campaign is the result of continued support from Mitchel Martin-Weber and funding through the Australian Government as part of their drive to showcase Australian talent overseas.
FBi Radio is Sydney’s largest independent youth broadcaster with over 459,000 monthly listeners. With 50% Australian music, half of that from Sydney, FBi is integral in discovering and supporting emerging and innovative Australian music.
