Falling for Enerate
With their seeds planted long ago by front man Josh Graham, Enerate have been one of Sydney's brightest up-and-coming bands which have always put nothing but good vibes and commitment into their work, and it's good to see it paying off. Consisting of Josh Graham (vocals and guitar), Therese Williams (vocals and keyboards), Matt Nicak (bass) and Ben Fitzpatrick (drums), Enerate are self-described acoustic electro-pop, with rolling melodies, infectious hooks and bouncing rhythms, all of which are expertly displayed in their now-growing back catalogue, including 'Unstoppable' which was used for MTV's NSW tourism ad campaign, as well as their newly-released single 'I Think I Love'. It's always been a labor of love for the self-made, unsigned band. Between a self-funded tour and film clip for 'Unstoppable', another one in the works for 'I Think I Love', alongside personal projects and their debut album on the cards, no one can accuse them of being lazy. From day one they've always embraced a do-it-yourself attitude to their music.
Last year saw the band produce their first film clip for their single 'Unstoppable' which truly showed off the many facets of their talent. Shooting the clip on a shoestring budget with friends volunteering their time and skills, they also managed to follow up this success with an east coast tour.
Therese: It's difficult, because we do have to do everything ourselves and keep our jobs on top of that, but I really love being in an independent band, not having to answer to anybody. It is difficult sometimes, getting people to our shows and things like that.
Ben: That’s the big one isn't it; getting people to our shows.
Josh: Yeah, I think it's quite easy to get a song out there, and get people to share our videos and stuff, we've got really supportive friends, but when you're playing six shows in Sydney over two months, you can't expect people to come to every one. I guess it's really about trying to get new people at shows. The thing for me about doing the marketing and all sides of it is that, I sit down and try to bang some songs out but then I think 'I should be making a facebook event for some show or working on the art for our new single and I find the song writing stuff can sometimes be pushed aside. That's what's been a real challenge for me: trying to balance everything.
More recently Enerate have just released another single, entitled 'I Think I Love' which was recently sitting at sixty-nine on the Triple J Unearthed charts. The new single melds jungle rhythms with their signature, colorful synths peppering the song.
Josh: I wrote ‘I Think I love’ about a year ago, when I was living in Annandale, and the whole thing just came to me while I was sitting on a bus. So I went home that night and stayed up really late and got the framework out. And ah, then we didn’t really do anything with it for a while.
Therese: Months and months. Then after we'd finished a bunch of other things we decided to get it done.
Josh: Yeah, we recorded everything in this awesome warehouse studio I was living in at the time. It was really great because it was the first track that actually had all of us in the studio and contributing at the one time. But then there was a long process of mixing and mastering, sending it back and forth, back and forth. Then I was like, shit I'm just going to mix it myself.
Ben: Did you mix it yourself did you? Awesome, we're all learning something.
Having known Josh personally for quite some time, I've heard mentions of a forthcoming Enerate album, but it's pretty hard to get anything committal out of him. It seems as if today would be no exception.
Josh: Well, the thing is, we've been chopping and changing around with a few songs and every time we get to a new sound, like 'I Think I Love', it kind of replaces a lot of other tracks that were going to go on the album originally. So I think as we find our sound the album kind of turns into a different thing each time. Over the next few months we'll be working on getting down a lot of tracks, and the video for "I Think I Love" drops soon. We've got a follow up single called "Half Asleep" that will come out early next year. It's a pretty exciting time for us at the moment. We're mostly concentrating on doing great singles and getting them out there. The album will come, but for the moment it's making cracking singles and videos.
