Eastudio - Sydney's Newest Creative Hub
Here at BYO we are all for supporting local talent, so when we discovered a new creative space that was doing the same thing in the Eastern Suburbs, we had to find out more.
Located in the iconic Beach Road Hotel at Bondi Beach, EASTUDIO is a pop-up gallery created to showcase the works of local artists, designers, illustrators, photographers, filmmakers and everything in between. A passion project conceived by Bondi locals Nathan Dunn and Kylie McDowell, EASTUDIO taps into the giant pool of creatives that live or work in Bondi and surrounding suburbs, as well as featuring creative work that has been inspired by the area. The collection is set to reflect the rich diversity of the people who live and work in the Eastern Suburbs.
What’s refreshing about EASTUDIO is that it’s a space where a creative community will thrive, connecting both established and emerging artists to a wider local audience. EASTUDIOs ethos of keeping it local is sure to encourage collaborations, create networks and spark unique artistic interest for exciting future shows.
With an exhibition every 3-4 weeks showcasing local talent, live art shows, live music / visual sets, special guests and of coarse, complimentary food and drinks, EASTUDIO will quickly become established as the ‘go to’ venue for the perfect social and cultural mix.
Launching the first group show this Thursday 5th Dec at 6pm, here is the first line up of local talent:
Artist -Rose Ashton
The very talented Rose Ashton has created this collection called ‘I am you and you are me’ specifically for the Eastudio launch.
Rose has been painting and drawing the human form from a very young age. She learnt her techniques through the guidance of her grandfather, Cedric Ashton and has taken influence from a long line of artists in the Ashton family.
Visiting the ‘Julian Ashton Art School’ more sporadically than she would have liked, Rose has now concentrated her attentions.
Her latest body of work is a collection of abstract portraits inspired by people in her life... Muses, masters and friends. Each individual’s personality is represented through an exploration of colour, shape and composition.
Graphic Designer- Emily Robson
A graphic designer, photographer and originally a country girl (you can tell by her charming country manners) Emily moved to the big smoke a little over 10 years ago, “there’s only so many times you can go to the one good restaurant in town before you go completely mad”.
She dabbled in a few things... administration, call centre, reception (but has a fear of talking on the phone), florist (is allergic to lilies), retail (is really bad at kissing the arses of stupid people and terrified of shoplifters)... but finally found her groove in graphic design and photography.
Drawing her inspiration from a combination of nature and urban landscapes, Emily is obsessed with the use of photography, collage and geometric shapes (and by obsessed she means you will probably see geometric shapes and photography in all of her artwork!)
Her current collection is an exploration and graphic celebration of the eastern suburbs, Bondi in particular.
Artist/Illustrator- Maxwell Burns
Max is an old school pen and ink sketch peddler with flakey paper sheet friends and seductive scribble addictions.
He grew up in Bondi as a nipper before attending Steiner School in the Blue Mountains. Max completed a Media Graphics degree in Sydney with a year spent on exchange in Amsterdam and another working in Barcelona and Berlin.
2011 was spent working for the Blender Collective, an art studio in Melbourne... 2012 was mainly spent in Europe and New york... 2014 he will begin his masters in fine arts at the Californian College of the Arts in San Francisco.
The series of illustrations are characters in an illustrated novel Max has written called Bowington Burns: Teller of Tales, Weaver of Webs. This jungle fantasy art project is an ongoing body of work; involving illustrations, paintings, murals, sculptures, animations, writings and prints that he intends to culminate into a published work upon completion of his masters.
Artist -Anne Harry
Anne is a Coogee based artist working in timber. She chooses to reuse timber where possible.
With the continuing deforestation of the worlds’ landmass her piece “Bee Tree” highlights both the need for habitat as well as three centuries of forestry practices in Australia. Timber is the ultimate renewable resource and yet so much rots in landfill.
Bee Tree displays the beauty of solid timber in all its hues. Based on the French warre hive which mimics the space of a hollow tree, bee tree is a stack of empty bee hives constructed from urban street fall timber that has been harvested from the streets of the eastern suburbs destined for landfill.
Stencil Artist- Jackson Farley
Jackson is an emerging artist hailing from Bondi who specializes in stencil art, of which the major themes are death renewal and spirituality.
Farley met E.L.K (Luke Cornish – Archibald finalist) an established stencil artist at an art show in Sydney in 2011, where he asked advice on how to stencil, advice which Cornish readily gave.
Since then the focus of Farleys’ practice has been stencilling and he has excelled in both local, national and international art competitions and prizes.
The ability to capture an almost photorealistic quality with stencilling is what attracted Farley initially. He then paired this with cartoon characteristics, bright colours and contrasting backgrounds to create a unique style to stencilling and street/urban art as a whole.
Overall, Farley aims to marry the new with the old and the divine with the profane. This is achieved through distorting what society perceives to be reality, while still keeping elements of popular and ancient culture hidden throughout.
Illustrator/Graphic Artist- Jimmy Fardouly
Jimmy is a Sydney based designer that we met hanging out in Bondi.
He has a background in animation at Walt Disney studios and currently works as a graphic artist for one of Australia’s most prominent street/ surf wear brands, Insight.
Jimmy also works as a freelance illustrator and has worked on a range of different projects for...
