Watch: Darkness In The ‘Burbs
There is something oddly evocative about watching Suburban Dark’s newest video for their single What Ya Know About? Evoking simultaneous emotions of intrigue, social opinion and attach, and an odd sexual attraction, this video should be watched, now.
The Sydney production duo have partnered up with Rapaport, fellow electronic hip hop beat boy to produce a track that is a heavy commentary on the state of ignorance in our society. Brought to life through imagery by visual artist Ali Infinite, What Ya Know About? is anything but otiose.
Suburban Dark is the creative compound of Chris Irvine and Ryan Wilmott. Chris says that when writing music, he and Ryan will often describe sounds in a visual manner; so this visual feast is something of a manifestation of their own creative process.
They have hinted at this kind of visual imagery and effects previously in videos such as their 2013 single Skeletone. What Ya Know About?, however, enters into a more mythical aesthetic that they haven’t reached before. Chris says that the main difference between Skeletone and What Ya Know About? is that Ali [Infinite] is a visual artist, and was able to bring a live imagery to the sound. This imagery is built around Rapaport disguised in eerie skeleton face paint, distorted and projected in varying ways, while he asks “what ya know about…” followed by a long list of topics.
“I think with the face paint, he (Rapaport) is trying to elevate from a normal person, he is a ‘being’, not a human. And then it comes back to the commentary of ignorance; it’s trying to detach from the human side of things. And the projection looks pretty cool.”
The visual impact of the video and Rapaport’s intrusive presence add to his helix of questions. Starting with smooth topics such as music taste and social setting, as the track builds, Rapaport’s lyrics reach a level of political- and self-awareness that may make you feel uncomfortable; or perhaps pleased.
Either way it’s an attack on personal authority and public appeal. Watch the video and feel what you will. If it’s a visual vice that you like, get yourself down to The Basement on Wednesday June 4th for the full live version as part of Vivid Sydney.
“It will be a live cut of visuals to our set. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. We write with visuals a lot in mind, so it’s really good to have that come to life. We hope to have this as a regular outfit as part of our live performance.”
Shedding visual light on the sound of Suburban Dark: opinionated entertainment.
