Conquest of Space: Science Fiction & Contemporary Art

When: May 22 – July 5
Where: Galleries UNSW, COFA, Cnr Oxford St and Greens Rd, Paddington
Cost: Free

Science fiction and art have shared a long history together. COFA is unveiling a new exhibition featuring more than 40 artworks that delve into the traditional narratives of the sci-fi genre. Forget all your preconceived notions of science fiction however; this exhibition reveals previously unexplored intersections between science fiction and the visual arts. The artworks showcased aim to discover the imagined possibilities of the future through the visual experience of the genre itself: across film, design, architecture, and games.

Most often represented through literature, sci-fi seeks to express the cultural anxieties and desires surrounding scientific innovation. As contemporary art is increasingly transformed by technology, these concepts and themes have become ever more intertwined with one another. COFA lecturer, Dr Andrew Frost, who has previously worked in partnership with the ABC on various art documentaries, will be leading the exhibition on the opening night.

Sci-fi lovers and art fans alike – you’re in for a treat with this one. Don’t miss it!
