On Thursday Nov 6, at The Stables in Surry Hills, local design house bou launched its first major collection, ‘broken-in & beyond’ – a series of bold and geometric hand screen printed clothing, homewares and textiles.
bou’s creative director, Christina Bouzios, has looked to abstract artists and colourists like Willem De Kooning and Franz Kline, as well as local legends Sydney Ball, Ken Done and Jenny Kee in conceiving the pieces that make up ‘broken-in & beyond’. She takes inspiration from Australian Aboriginal art, South American artisinal techniques and the classic ideals behind european and Scandinavian design.
“I generally look to artworks, designers and movements that emit a strong and bold sensibility,” says Bouzios. “For me, its about evoking emotion. I need an attachment to the piece that will speak to its owner.”
bou is a broad design house. In it, delicate ceramic pieces sit astride classically cut linen and cotton garments, and graphic bedding. “The beauty of working with prints and textiles is that they can be appropriated across almost anything,” Bouzios continues. “I have worked a lot in visual merchandising and art direction as well as design, so carrying a textile and branding concept across from textiles to fashion and homewares is really exciting.”
The pieces also focus on functionality and durability. The garments are classically cut, trans-seasonal, and many can be worn in several ways thanks to cleverly positioned buttons and zips. The designs are elegant yet eccentric.
These garments are for women with classic taste that are looking to make an impact,” says Bouzios. And all pieces are designed and made in Australia.
For the last six years, Bouzios has designed, made, exhibited and sold small collections of clothing and textiles around Sydney’s artisan galleries and markets, but ‘‘broken-in & beyond’ marks the official launch of her bou brand.
“It is the perfect introduction to what bou is,” she says. “The pieces are all constructed in black and white – classic, striking and bold – with a touch of colour to add a little pizzaz. My previous collections were very experimental and avant-garde, working with different textures of fabric, cuts and features, but ‘broken-in & beyond is more classic, curated and considered. That said, a lot of the pieces are very dramatic – just like me.”
