BYO unearths Brisbane’s Talented Young Designers
This month BYO attended the Young Designers Market (YDM) in Brisbane to see what the young river city creatives had to offer. The Market, founded in 2007, is held between 10am and 4pm on the first Sunday of every month in the heart of the bustling South Bank precinct.
You can find an eclectic selection of jewellery, clothing, glassware, artwork and other veritable treasures nestled in between some of the greatest restaurants in Brisbane. The market takes up the entire length of Little Stanley Street and its stalls are run by some of the friendliest and most passionate people you’re likely to meet, but don’t let that fool you, these little labels are not your average Sunday market fare (which you can find at the weekly Southbank Lifestyle markets that run alongside the YDM), oh no, at the YDM you’ll find some of Brisbane’s most exciting up-and-coming labels from up to 80 talented new designers.
Our pick of the bunch:
Chrissa Alexion Jewellery – stunning delicate pieces designed with a raw modern edge. www.lovechrissa.etsy.com
EJPJ’s Sleepwear – the cutest, softest handmade, organic cotton pyjama’s you will ever find. The best parts of Ellie Jean’s designs are the subtly hilarious tongue-in-cheek prints. www.facebook.com/elliejeandesigns
Dinjuan – brightly coloured charismatic clothing, swimwear and jewellery inspired by Africa (some products are even sourced direct from local African craftspeople). www.dinjuan.ifp3.com
The Wanderers Co – a very cool unisex casualwear label consisting of simple designs with a cheeky flair and the odd pop of a quirky print for good measure. www.wanderersco.com.au
Shy Fox – a little label that sells all sorts of things from unisex t-shirts, and art prints to skate decks and wallets all tied together with a very strong aesthetic of sweet and eclectic little designs www.facebook.com/ShyFoxShop
If you’re thinking of visiting the Young Designers Market (which you definitely should) the stalls run rain, hail or shine and parking is available at the South Bank Parklands Underground Car Park - access via Tribune Street or Little Stanley Street.
Upcoming markets are:
Sunday 5 January 2014
Sunday 2 February 2014
