BYO Tracks: DZ Deathrays – ‘Gina Works At Hearts’
DZ Deathrays, everyone's favourite Brisbane thrash-pop two-piece, have just released a new tune. Gina Works at Hearts is the second single from their upcoming album Black Rat, slated for a May 2nd release.
Northern Lights, the first single from the upcoming album, was a pared-back, psychedelic affair. Gina Works at Hearts, though, is a definite return to DZ's familiar Bloodstreams sound. These two tracks have demonstrated the band's new direction, which frontman Shane Parsons recently described to FasterLouder as "a mashup of melodic and heavy."
Though this track is still held together by thick guitar and punchy drums - not to mention grungy drawl of Parsons - the whole package sounds slightly more refined than DZ's previous releases. The band's evolution can be partially attributed to Australian producer Burke Reid, who helped tighten up the screws on Black Rat.
Don't sweat it, though. Gina Works at Hearts is still loud and angry enough to make you want to kick a hole in your computer, then drink Jäger until you forget about it.
If you're lucky enough to have a Secret Garden ticket, you can catch DZ Deathrays this weekend. After that, and one gig in Coolangatta, the band will be heading to Texas for SXSW, to take the same stage they were kicked off for being too loud in 2012.
