It’s that time of the week again, the magical part where hump day is over, and the light that we know as “the weekend” is in sight. With an array of talented acts playing around Sydney over the next couple of days, it’s time to look at BYO’s 5 best picks.
Vance Joy @ OAF, Thursday, August 29.
By now I’m sure that many of you reading this would have heard the name ‘Vance Joy’. He’s been making waves nationally and internationally since the release of his promising EP ‘God Loves You When You’re Dancing.’ This hasn’t detracted at all from how talented this young folkster is, and it will be the last chance you can catch him before he heads overseas for a few months.
Big Scary, Courtney Barnet @ The Factory Theatre – Friday, August 30.
Big Scary consists of duo Tom Iansek and Jo Syme, who have been producing beautiful alt-pop tracks since 2006. This tour is in support of their sophomore album ‘Not Art’, which has been described as a “hauntingly beautiful album full of emotionally charged harmonies and stunning instrumental melodies”. If this is anything to go buy, I think it’s best to get down to the Factory Theatre and witness their latest stage show. They’ve recently added two more member for the performance line-up, ensuring this to be a captivating gig.
Japandroids @ Manning Bar – Saturday, August 31.
Japandroids are close to what could be called quintessential garage rock. With the anthemic, celebratory rock’n’roll style down pat, and their ever present punk twinged influence, they sure are a charismatic act. Fresh back on our shores since doing the Laneway Festival tour earlier this year, it’s a chance to catch the Vancouver duo in a more intimate space. The energy that these guys feed off each other on stage is actually incredible to watch, and its sure thing no one with be leaving without a mop of wet hair and a lack of voice.
Astral Peoples 2nd Birthday @ Goodgod Small Club – Saturday, August 31.
Two years of bringing some of the most incredible acts to Australian audiences deserves a party, and a party this will most definitely be! Held at their spiritual home Goodgod, Astral People have invited some of their closest musical family including Jonti and Friends, Collarbones, Otologic, Tuff Sherm, Bon Chat Bon Rat, Mike Who, Ben Fester & Astral DJ’s. There are still some surprises that won’t be announced until the night, so let your curiosity take over and get down to see what a true Danceteria party is all about.
The Smith Street Band @ The Annandale – Saturday, August 31.
Fast becoming Australia’s favourite folk-punk acts, Melbournites The Smith Street Band are set to take the stage at the iconic Annandale Hotel this Saturday. These guys have gone from strength to strength, constantly receiving appraisal on both their material since their sophomore album ‘Sunshine and Technology. Now touring their latest release, the aptly titled ‘Don’t Fuck With Our Dreams’ EP, it’s sure to be a show full of punk party vibes that they’re renowned for.
