BYO Sounds #25
With the public holiday season officially dead now for a while, there is no reason to get down, but instead get out and enjoy some of the wide variety of musical talent playing in and around Sydney this weekend.
Youth Lagoon @ Oxford Art Factory – Thursday, January 30.
One of America’s most innovative musical minds is returning to our shores, with Trevor Powers AKA Youth Lagoon, taking to the stage this Thursday night. He’s artist who almost defined the term ‘bedroom producer’, with his sound incorporating everything between marching 4/4 drums and lush synthesizers, yet never losing the homegrown intimacy. Support act Broods are someone to be almost just as excited for, a pop duo from Auckland, who are unsurprisingly getting a lot of comparisons to Lorde recently, even recently working with the same producer of her debut album. Most definitely watch out for these guys.
The Vanns + The Familiars @ Gallery Bar, Oxford Art Factory – Friday, January 31.
The Vanns consist of a couple of guys from Kiama, that manage to successfully blend old- school blues and straight up indie-pop. Imagine if you can, Jinja Safari and Kings of Leon’s illegitimate love child. They’ve been getting the tick of approval from the triple J headquarters and are now embarking on quite an extensive summer tour which will be taking them all the way down to Tasmania. The Familiars are a Byron based band with a D.I.Y attitude to match, they’ve recently released a new EP which is sure to translate well to the live stage. Oh and just to make things even better, no wallet damage for this one.
Lime Cordiale @ Upstairs Beresford - Saturday, February 1.
Soon to embark on a trip around the US which will see the Lime Cordiale guys hit up South By South West along the way, this will be one of the last chances to catch them live for a while. For anyone that hasn’t heard of them before, they consist of five fellas from the Northern Beaches who make hook-laded rock with elements of ska seeping in, that basically just makes you want to dance. It’s certainly going to be a cheap weekend, as this one is a free show too.
The Whitlams @ Concert Lawn, Taronga Zoo –Saturday, February 1.
Here’s for something a little different, a multi-time ARIA winning band that’s been around for over ten years, that are playing at a zoo. This event is part of the Taronga Twilight series, a unique concert series dating back to 1996 that was originally started to raise funds for the conservation and welfare of animals within Australia. I don’t need do any more convincing for the musical talent of the night, The Whitlams back catalogue speaks for itself. Grab the picnic blanket out and head across the harbour for what’s sure to be a very special event.
Laneway Festival after-party feat. HAIM (DJ Set), CHVRCHES (DJ Set), Taco (Odd Future), Jona Ma – Sunday, February 2.
Missed out on Laneway tickets? Well here’s a consolation prize in a way, the Laneway after party. It’s got some big names dropping by for some killer DJ sets over the night, including the most awesome chick-rockers in quite a few years, Haim, Glasgow locals CHVRCHES, Odd Future’s Taco and Jono Ma of the Jagwar Ma boys, performing another DJ set. The party goes over both rooms and there is apparently even more acts to be announced. As you can imagine tickets for this are moving quite fast, with first release already being sold out, my advice is to get in extremely quick.
