BYO Sounds - DEC 04
By James Sherley
BYO Sounds brings you the best of what you can expect to hear over the weekend all wrapped up nicely in this little gift package below. This week we’ve got Oisima and Willow Beats, The Preatures, Gingerfest, Daniel Lee Kendall and more.
The Waifs @ Anita’s Theatre – Wednesday, December 3.
Apparently folk-rock ain’t dead. Despite the Marcus Mumford inspired folk-hate, long standing trio The Waifs are returning to the road again. It’s the first time that they’ve toured with a full backing band since 2001, and I have to say, I’m damn excited. Upcoming singer-songwriter Liz Stringer is joining the bill in support too.
Daniel Lee Kendall @ Brighton Up Bar – Friday, December 5.
Daniel Lee Kendall has finally returned after quite a few years of discovery and contemplation with his debut LP ‘Daniel Lee Kendall is Dead’. Although supporting the likes of Passenger, Old Man River and Hungry Kids of Hungary early in his career, this will be his first headline tour to date on ‘The Funeral Tour’, performing songs from written years back that he has finally decided to show to the world.
The Preatures @ The Hi-Fi – Friday, December 5.
Fast becoming one of this years’ biggest Aussie exports, The Preatures have made 2014 a huge one, achieving everything from releasing their debut album ‘Blue Planet Eyes’ to critical acclaim, to sharing the stage with The Rolling Stones. It certainly does appear that they’re destined for stages much bigger than this in the very near future, so catch them while you can.
Gingerfest feat. The Snowdroppers @ The Factory Theatre – Saturday, December 6.
Some of our finest punk acts are coming together in memory of Canberra music identity Nicholas Sofer-Schreiber AKA The Ginger Ninja, at the aptly title Gingerfest/ The lineup is suitably massive with 28 Days, The Snowdroppers, Totally Unicorn, Bagster, Super Best Friends just to name a few, with all proceeds going to Vision Australia.
Willow Beats + Oisima @ The Basement – Saturday, December 6.
Following the runaway success of their single ‘Merewif’, uncle and niece duo Willow Beats have just released their sophomore EP ‘Water’. Combining synth hooks and fluttering beats, it makes for a six-track that is nothing short of remarkable. Adelaide’s master of chill, Oisama is opening for the night.
