Exclusive Interview with Buzz Kull

Sydney lofi duo Buzz Kull have been making some considerable waves the last 6 months. Releasing a new EP and supporting the likes of Holy Fuck & Gary Numan, kubi from Rare-finds catches up with Marc to discuss Numan, Video concepts and Smoked Bratwurst.

Hey Marc, how are you going?

Hey Kubi, all is well thank you. I have been catching up on a few days of sleep and the finishing touches to moving in to my new abode.

Awesome. So first things first, you got to support the legendary Godfather of electronic music Gary Numan last week! How did you manage to hook up that sweet support?

Ha! Yeah, I am still finding it difficult to believe that this actually happened.

I have not been nervous for a show in such a long time until this was brought forward.

The mail I received about the show had a similar structure to those spam emails everyone tends to experience on a daily basis. It started with "Congratulations!" and I was not sure whether to believe it at first, I was weary about it until they sent through the show poster a few days after.

I am not too sure how true this is, though I heard there were a few bands sent to Gary by the promoter and he chose the support from those acts.

Nice, did you get to bro down with Gary? Did he say anything about your set?

I noticed he was side of stage with his wife and another member of his band at one point when we were performing.

After the show had finished I felt determined to go say hello and thank him for having us.

I was walking down to his dressing room and I could here an aggressive argument going on and everyone was leaving the room looking like they had just seen a ghost.

I turned around and walked the other way knowing if I went in there It may have been a terrible experience and possible night ruiner.

I have no regrets about what I did and I feel it was the sensible path to take.

Totally, you wouldn’t want to be in the middle of a Gary Numan scuffle! So your latest single “echo planes" was released with a pretty dark video. How did the video concept come about?

We directed the angle towards the cold European films that were made in the late 70s and early 80s with a lot of unexplained detail to drugs, sex, violence and homoeroticism.

And the kids in the video? Who are these gloomy beatnik’s?

It was the first time I had ever been involved in any kind of casting for this kind of project, Johnny and Sian had taken care of it all and I met the actors later down the track. All whom were lovely.

Johnny Welch is a Sydney filmmaker. His blog and instagram have similar running themes of bleak imagery. Including black magic, goths, nudity, love and death. Did his work inspire you to reach out to him or did he approach you?

I met Johnny and his girlfriend (Sian) at a warehouse party we played a show at with Spirit Valley. We planned to meet for a drink after and discussed collaborating together on a video for a track off the EP (heat).

I checked out Johnny's work a few days after and I was blown away with how incredible and obscure his work was.

We met up and discussed the project over a few weeks and made me realise how much we had in common from watching Kenneth Anger films to listening to Chrome.

That’s so true, I watched some if his short films on his website and thought the concepts and cinematography were amazing. Now that we’re half way through 2014, what can we expect from Buzz Kull in the second half of the year?

I am playing a handful of shows around Sydney then taking a break for some time to spend writing and math out the possibilities for an album this year and other paths we can endeavor upon.

Ok, so if I wasn’t a local, in good old Sydney, where would Buzz Kull take me to A) fill my belly B) quench my thirst and C) get my party limbs moving?

A. The Shakespeare seems to be a never fail, though I was introduced to this great Chinese dumpling house on Pitt street called 'Sea Bay' that is also excellent!

B. Low Bar is has the most incredible tequila and whiskey selection with great records being played.

C. Fredas tends to have the right atmosphere I am after.

And lastly…

Weiner or Smoked Bratwurst?

Smoked Bratwurst, My friend jesse got me onto smokey flavors, so anything smoked is where its at!

Beer or bourbon?

Both for $10

Bieber or Cyrus?

Cyrus, Bieber is bad people.

Miley is just having a good time at other peoples expense and riding the hate wave.

Arctic & Antarctica?

Arctic, I need some civilization.

Dark Wave or New Wave?

New Wave, I feel it comes close to covering both of these.

Thanks Marc
