Blind Date With A Book
We’re all guilty of judging a book by its cover every now and again, if not always. What else is there to judge it off, if not the front cover? “A few select words” is the answer that Elizabeth’s Bookshop has to this question.
This lovely little Australian bookshop with stores in Sydney’s Newtown and CBD, as well as Perth and Fremantle, have hatched a lovely Blind Date With A Book concept. In an effort to save the oft-scorned art directors, photographers and artists charged with putting an entire novel into one image or design, Elizabeth’s have decided to wrap up their books in brown paper and take to nouns, verbs and adjectives for all the talking.
Encouraging customers to “try new things”, this concept really should challenge readers to discover books that they may not have chosen based on first appearances. But there is one other thing that this little idea is great for too, and that’s gift giving. Firstly, the book is always wrapped for you; and secondly, for those of us who struggle to find appropriate gifts, this is the perfect solution. What’s more, if your friend doesn’t like the book, you cannot be held to blame, because hell, you didn’t know what would be hiding beneath the brown wrapping paper either!
More bookshops should do blind book dating, and more people should buy the books. Because we all know that we won’t stop judging book by their covers.
