Beers with the Swerve Crew
The Swerve crew are a pretty noisy bunch. When their not blowing out speakers and eardrums every Saturday from 6pm-8pm on Bondi Beach Radio with their creative mixes always bringing plenty of bass, you can usually find them drinking and having a pretty good time; who else would you want in charge of sending out your Saturday night vibes? Whether its Beans, Kieran or Nait on the decks or The Versace Taco, aka TVMPST MC (Jack) spitting rhymes that flow like water, you can rest assured that the party is in good hands with these guys. Backyard Opera was silly enough to invite the guys over for a beer and a chat. Here's what we got before the beers took priority.
So how'd all you guys meet up?
Beans: I used to go to TAFE with Kieran and then I met Nait when I worked at DJ warehouse, then Kieran tried to copy us but we had already bailed.
Kieran: But then Nait came back.
Nait: Yeah, I went back for a second innings for a few weeks. They must have needed to lift some heavy shit or something. But yeah, that’s pretty much how I met these guys. Got to see Kieran get sacked, that was pretty cool.
Kieran: I never got sacked, I just left twice.
Beans: I got sacked, girlfriend at the time was keeping CDJs from me and they were the stores. I don't think I've really told anyone that story. It was pretty funny when the owner found out though. He sent an email around saying people could no longer borrow the CDJs, clearly directed at me. Then later in the day he comes up to me and says "Brendan, where are those CDJs?" and all I could say was "Dude they're at home, you only sent the email today" and the dude goes totally nuts screaming "You've got to be fucking kidding me". He punches the computer screen right of the desk.
Nait: Ha! Yeah, it was like a six year old in a super-market; it was horrible.
So all you guys met up in Sydney?
Jack: Well I've known Beansy from the Central Coast.
Beans: Oh yeah, this guys part of the crew as well.
Jack: Ha ha. Yeah Beansy and I played music together for the HSC.
Beans: Yeah, then we moved out together. It was the first place either of us had lived in by ourselves.
Jack: Yeah, that was when Beans got his first set of decks; was a big dubstep time. That's also when I met Kieran.
Beans: Yeah, Kieran used to be way into heavy metal.
Kieran: Yeah it was all really brutal death metal and then Beans started playing me a whole bunch of dubstep and I just got into it.
Beans: Yeah, thank fuck, because I was sick of that shit.
Kieran: I think someone did a presentation of that Daft Punk pyramid thing and I thought it looked awesome. So I knew Beans was into "electronic music" and I went to him and said "So you can get tickets to Daft Punk yeah? Like you know all about that electronic music?" and Beans just says "No! That’s fuckin' shit!". So I'm like "That's cool, can't get tickets. But hang on, isn't all electronic music the same?" and Beans says "Shut the fuck up and come to Void one weekend."
Beans: I was a little bit more tactful than that.
Kieran: In my head that's exactly how it went. I think he also told me to download Skream, but I spelt it scream and couldn't find anything.
So how did you go from being really into metal and stuff to being in Swerve?
Kieran: Well they're kind of similar, heavy metal/heavy bass. Also when I went to TAFE I was so indoctrinated into metal and that whole scene. So when I was exposed to something different I just kind of embraced it. And the sound at the Void shows in those days was so loud and the bass was so heavy, I'd never heard anything quite like it. I mean you go to most metal shows and it's just really harsh and brutal. But I went to this place and was just dying to know more.
So I know all you guys are solo artists in your own right. Why Swerve instead of just working individually?
Beans: Because we're all mates and just love playing together; it's too much fun.
Nait: Yeah, Kieran and I were talking about doing a podcast before all this came up.
Kieran: I think the way it came up was they [Bondi Beach Radio] contacted me and asked me to do a whole bunch of like strings and stuff for the station and they also mentioned they had a spot for a show. I ended up talking about the radio show way more than anything else. So right after I sorted that out, I went around to Nait's place to start getting onto.
Jack: Yeah, I mean these guys all have very complementary styles. They play similar music but all approach it from different angles. Kieran's definitely got more of a darker edge and Beans is usually working the hype while Nait is just really well rounded and always comes with something new. We also have a themed show every month to keep it fresh, the last one was hip-hop and before that there was a golden era of UK hardcore.
Beans: And we got Jack in because we're all really shit on radio and he's just got a silver tongue.
So you guys are in people's houses from 6-8pm every Saturday getting people pumped for their Saturday night. Is that always on your heads going into a show?
Beans: We have a bit of a formula down now and we're generally building up bpms.
Nait: Yeah we also try to keep it really varied. I always play first because I have to set up all the gear and I'm also a bit slower on the bpms.
I'm told you guys will be having a few guests on over the next few weeks from the Subsonic lineup to have a chat and do a set. Can I give us any more?
Beans: Yeah, they approached us and said they'd love it if we had a few artists on. So we're just going to have one a week leading up to Subsonic and we'll have a talk with them and they'll do a 45min guest set. In terms of who we're having on? You'll just have to tune into Boni Beach Radio at 6pm to find out.
