ART PARTY: ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY
An event has been brewing. A secret and wonderful event. An event so unique that its overtly obvious name will probably throw you off. ‘Art Party’ has happened once a month for the past year in Sydney’s Inner West and has just held its biggest event to date. On top of recent trips to Brisbane, Byron Bay, Canberra, Gosford and Melbourne, the last event in Sydney saw over 180 people attend a warehouse in Marrickville and helped solidify Art Party into Sydney's emerging underground arts scene.
Resisting standard classification, Art Party is breaking new ground by providing an intimate space for emerging artists of all types (musicians, poets, performers, dancers, comedians, magicians and so on) to perform on the same line-up to a genuinely interested audience. Too often do we go to gigs only to have the performance drowned out by laughing, background music and the general hum of many venues. And there's nothing wrong with that! However, another thing that makes Art Party different from similar events is the up-close, warm and friendly setting. Mostly held in people's homes, be it a large backyard or warehouse, the Art Party audience is immediately engaged with whatever art is occurring and not removed from the artistic process, such as when an artist performs on stage and the audience stands separately and claps politely. This is a community event with everyone (performer and punter) on the same level.
So far each Art Party has offered up something different from the last. This is due largely to Art Party brainchild and host Jessie Ray, who emphasises diversity on the night by going for a varied and ‘oh so arty’ line-up. The acts usually consist of a mix between spoken-word artists, a few musicians and a few other random arty acts thrown in (be it burlesque, live installation-art, painting workshops ,didgeridoo healing, opera singing, group hypnosis or life-drawing, to name just a few).
The last Art Party set in Sydney saw the performances shift from edgy spoken word poetry, to sultry singer-song writing, to a traditional Greek music explosion, to frenetic belly-dancing, to large-scale bubble manipulation, to a two-piece folk duo, to a sexy-yoga workshop, to a solo hip-hop performance, to more poetry and live music.
As well as the usual art extravaganza, Art Party has a regular art corner where people are encouraged to paint, draw, collaborate and spill their creative juices. The whole Art Party project fosters a sense of community, with a growing collective making Art Party a regular event in their calendar.
With each event growing in stature and attendance, it is only fitting that the upcoming one-year anniversary show be held in a slightly bigger, still community based venue, the Red Rattler in Marrickville. The one year anniversary will be no doubt be an all arty hoedown, with many of the most popular acts over the last year returning for the first birthday show.
