An Organised Life Design
It seems New Zealand talent is in major demand right now and we’re not complaining - Beck Wadworth of An Organised Life Design formerly from Marlborough, South Island NZ has made her own mark on Aussie soil.
Making her new home in Sydney, it wasn’t long before her passion for typography and design matched with meticulous detailing of everyday events and to do lists that An Organised Life Design came about. A self-confessed organisational freak, Beck Wadworth released a Limited Edition Twenty Fourteen Diary that was modern, simple and ‘oh so chic’. With the success of her Diary and the recent expansion of her collection, it’s no wonder all stationary fanatics and organized freaks have jumped on board to see what this new talent has to offer.
A creative genius in her own right and lover of typography, we decided to pick her brain on all things de-cluttering, hangouts, challenges and can’t live without products.
Describe An Organised Life Design?
An Organised Life Design was created to bring something classic but modern to that young fashion forward girl that needs that wee bit of organisation in her fast paced but exciting life!
How did you get into typography?
I have always been a creative growing up and knew I wanted something in the design/fashion industry. After high school I moved up to Auckland and studied a Bachelor of Design (Hons) majoring in Visual Communications at Massey University. During university I began to grow a huge passion and love for typography. My signature style is minimalist with black/white and statement typography.
Tell us about how you got started?
I have always been a self-confessed organised freak! Everyone always laughs at my uncountable list pads and diaries! But…. I have never found one that contains everything I need! It has always been a dream of mine (a nerdy dream in that!) to design my own organisers and stationery and I felt the time was right to make it all happen! It has been a great hobby to keep up my graphic design skills outside of my day job and I have learnt so much along the way.
I started my stationery range by releasing a Limited Edition Twenty Fourteen Diary and recently released some Notebook Sets. I hope to launch a few more items into the collection this year as well.
How organised are you in real life?
I really like to live an organised life! I think my friends and boyfriend think I am crazy but it makes me feel calm and at ease! For example
· I de-clutter everything on a Sunday, from my handbag to the fridge! Then I can start the week feeling fresh, relaxed and organised!
· I write uncountable amounts of lists, from supermarket lists, to bucket lists, to daily lists.
· I prioritise my days using a numbering system usually! Then I assess where I am at midday and re priortise!
· I plan my weekend in advance usually the weekend before!
Tell us about your world?
Where do I start?! I am originally from Marlborough in the South Island of NZ where my family are still based (my favourite place in the world). I moved to Sydney from Auckland at the start of last year and work full time in the fashion industry. In the evenings and weekends I focus on my An Organised Life Design projects when I am not caught up in the Bondi bubble visiting the markets, cafes, friends or the beach!
I am obsessed with Ecoya Candles, Beyonce and fresh flowers from the Bondi Markets and I absolutely love The Grahame Norton Show! My family mean the world to me, and if I could go anywhere in the world tomorrow it would be back home to visit them.
What challenges have you faced with your label?
I definitely learnt a lot when I first launched my diaries, I was nervous to begin and didn’t expect it to do as well as it did! I had to ask my friends to come over and help me wrap and pack order for the first week until I got on top of it all! Now when I launch a new product I pre wrap, package and organize everything so it makes the process a lot easier.
Working full time has also been a challenge in those crazy times! But I have managed to utilize my evenings and weekend to my advantage and now have a pretty good routine.
I can imagine that I will still continue to learn a lot over the next year as I begin to look at stores to stock my products and launch more new products. But my fingers and toes are crossed!
When you’re not getting creative, what are you doing?
I work full time in Sydney in the fashion industry across marketing / PR and social media so that keeps me busy. When I am not at work, or at home working on An Organised Life, you can often find me roaming around Bondi at the markets, or on the Bondi to Bronte walk with friends or at a café with my man! I love the Bondi bubble!
Where can we find your designs?
Currently I only sell my designs on my blog www.anorganisedlife.com/store, but I make sure to keep everyone up to date on my Instagram too @anorganisedlifedesign
What are you currently working on?
Another addition to the An Organised Family that I am hoping to launch in May and also the 2015 Diary.
Where can you see the label expanding?
Currently I ship to NZ and Australia, but I am hoping to expand worldwide. I would also really love to have stockiest across both countries for my 2015 Diaries that will launch in September this year and… my long term dream would be to have a store or two! A girl can dream!
A little bird told us that you are holding a competition along with Jasmine Dowling, another creative mastermind in typography and design - how did this come about?
Yes, we actually just announced the winner last week. I have been a fan of Jasmine’s for a while now, probably because of our mutual love for typography and a minimalist design style! I had x1 2014 Diary left that is a complete one off with an embossed black logo instead of a white printed logo. I didn’t want it to go to waste and contacted jasmine to see if she would like to collaborate on a giveaway. It seemed like the perfect combination!
Living in Bondi, Sydney where do you like to go and get creative?
I love to spend time strolling down the beach in the evenings to clear my head before I head home to work on my designs, or else watching the sunset on the grassy knoll at North Bondi with my friends and boyfriend also works a treat. Coming from Marlborough I have always needed some kind of open space to feel relaxed and inspired. At home I have the beautiful hills and vineyards or the Marlborough Sounds and in Sydney I have the stunning beach and ocean views. Bliss.
What keeps you motivated and inspired?
I’m a very career driven person, I really like to push and challenge myself! I get inspired from a lot of things around me but mostly life experiences and the people I meet.
I also absolutely love going home to Marlborough to relax at home with family and friends, soaking up the surroundings and beautiful views. I never want to leave. It’s a great way to relax, reflect and clear your head from the fast paced Sydney lifestyle!
However I love the drive and passion I feel for Sydney when it comes to my career and An Organised Life ventures.
I am inspired and motivated from both places definitely.
Top three products you cant live without?
A Diary (of course!) – I need to visually write everything down daily, lists, birthdays, events! It keeps me on track
My iPhone - I don’t know how I could live with out my iPhone. It keeps me connected to my family, my friend, my emails and also keeps me up to date with everything via instagram, my An Organised Life Orders, transport timetables, new spots to visit! Everything.
My Jewellery – From my Karen Walker rings and necklace to my solid silver bracelet I was given from my parents when I was 12 just before I went to boarding school, all my jewellery I wear daily brings back memories that I love from the past. These beauties never ever come off!
